Why locally grown flowers are a better Mother’s Day gift
Flowers are always a lovely way to show appreciation for the mama in your life, but locally grown flowers are a “cut” above the rest. There are several reasons why your Mother’s Day bouquet or arrangement will make an even bigger impact when you choose locally grown flowers arranged by me, a professional flower farmer-florist with nine years of experience right here in Sacramento. Read on to find out more about your unique opportunity to get flowers expertly arranged by the same person who grew many of them.
Local flowers are fresher
Would you rather eat food that was harvested a couple of days ago, or would you rather have your meal sit in the cargo holds of planes, trucks and long-term coolers before it made its way to your table? Local flowers can be harvested much closer to the time when they are delivered because they often only need to travel a few miles rather than coming from an entirely different continent. Many of the flowers that Bloom sells are grown by us on our suburban flower farm right here in Sacramento, and the rest come from other farms as close to Sacramento as possible. We never import flowers from other countries, so your stems come from growing locations much closer to your home and are fresher.
Because we don’t chemically treat our flowers, they are bright, fragrant and displayed at their peak. They usually last somewhere between 4 and 6 days — but that can vary widely depending on the type of flower, how warm your home is, how often you change the water, and many other things.
Local flowers promote what’s in season
When you choose local flowers for your Mother’s Day bouquet, you can get a good picture of the flowers that are available in our local ecosystem. Here in Sacramento, we are growing lots of beautiful spring flowers this year, including foxglove, snapdragon, godetia, Icelandic poppies and lots more. The weather this year has been particularly weird, but when you choose local flowers you are getting an authentic representation of our local growing season.
Local flowers are sustainable
When your bouquet includes flowers grown in Sacramento, your flowers don’t need to rely on airplanes to get to your home. The closer your flowers are grown to their destination, the smaller their carbon footprint will be. We source every flower as close to Sacramento as possible, including from right here in Sacramento.
Bloom’s packaging is also 100% recyclable and compostable. When we deliver flowers, we don’t use single-use plastic, and our arrangements never use harmful floral foam. Our flowers are left in upcycled jars or cans of water on your recipient’s doorstep, instead of being left out to dry.
Local flowers also support the local economy: When you buy Mother’s Day flowers from Bloom, you are supporting local flower farmers and helping to keep jobs local.
What’s in a Bloom Mother’s Day bouquet
Bloom is offering two options for Mother’s Day flowers. You can choose a thoughtful wrapped bouquet or an elevated vase arrangement.
Our delivery date this year is Saturday, May 9 — all of our flowers will be delivered the day before Mother’s Day so you don’t have to stress about your schedule.
All of our Mother’s Day flowers are hand-delivered with care, and are always left in water if no one answers the door at your recipient’s home, not carelessly dropped in a cardboard box. The delivery fee is $15.
The exact flowers in your bouquet will vary depending on seasonal availability. This means your bouquet is one-of-a-kind and a representation of the fresh, local flowers blooming around the area.
Our ordering window opens April 13, and the last day to order is May 4.
Keep the gift going by adding on a subscription
There’s one more way you can make your Mother’s Day gift extra special when you order flowers from Bloom: By adding on a three-month flower subscription. The gift of a bouquet is a great way to say “Happy Mother’s Day,” and a subscription add-on is a way to show you are thinking of mom every month. It’s a great way to turn your one-day gift into a summer-long experience.
When you order Mother’s Day flowers from Bloom, you can add on monthly deliveries: one each in June, July and August. Those deliveries will be our standard arranged bouquets, which follow the seasons and feature a glimpse at the flowers that are blooming at the time of the deliveries. Imagine summer bouquets with fun flowers like dahlias, sunflowers and so much more — but remember that the flowers in your bouquets will vary depending on availability.
