Not to put myself out of a job, but I do understand that everyone has their own budgets and maybe my flower subscription doesn’t fit into that. I still want you to be able to get yourself some locally grown flowers for yourself when the time does come.
So here are some tips and suggestions for when you are wanting to buy flowers. Many of these suggestions are about where to buy locally grown flowers in Sacramento, CA, however, even if you aren’t from here, you can still apply these ideas to your area.
Where to buy locally grown flowers near Sacramento:
Farmers Markets
If you aren’t getting your flowers from me, the first place you should be checking is your local farmers market! In Sacramento, there are an abundance of certified farmers markets and everything that is sold there is (supposed to be) grown by the farmers vending there. Many markets have multiple flower farmers as well, so you can buy a sampling from each or just find your favorites out of the abundance that is available. Here is a link that takes you to many of the certified farmer’s markets in the Sacramento, CA area. While you are there, grab your fresh produce for the week too! Just make sure you bring cash, many vendors don’t always take cards. Find locations here.
*Disclaimer: Just because you are buying directly from a farmer doesn’t make it organic. Also, non-organic items are not necessarily inferior to organic ones. It also doesn’t mean there aren’t any pesticides, just ones that have been labeled safe for organic farming. (Not a controversial topic at all 🫣)
Grocery Stores
It can be so easy to slide a bouquet into your cart at the grocery store. But most of the time you have no idea where they were grown or how far they have traveled to get to you. More natural grocery stores like Whole Foods, Nugget Markets, and your local co-op (like the Sacramento Co-op) are going to carry AND label their flowers that have come from local flowers.
If you are shopping at places like Trader Joe’s, Aldi, or other big chain grocery stores, look for flowers that have been labeled as CA GROWN, and not just the “assembled in CA” sticker because that does not mean the same thing. If you are outside of CA see if they label the flowers for your state and if not, you can ask the floral department and they SOMETIMES can tell you where they were grown.
Flower Farmers
A really helpful site is LocalFlowers.org. Here you can find local flower farmers in your area or in the area where you want to send flowers to.
Some farmers offer U-PICK options where you go and pay a fee and you get to pick the flowers yourself. Others may have their own farm stands or may allow you to visit their farm to purchase. Just make sure you find out their policies first. DON’T just show up to someone’s flower farm without making sure it’s OK first.
I feel like I could go on about this topic for a while but I think this may be a good place to stop before it gets too overwhelming. If you have any questions, I am happy to answer them to the best of my knowledge. You can always email me or send me a DM on Instagram!
Happy flower hunting!
